Project Management

Water Engineering Services Ltd (WES) was approached by Baker Hicks to design and construct a drainage water pumping station for their client Astra Zeneca. The pumping station formed part of a larger site wide drainage system improvement program at Astra Zeneca’s Macclesfield facilities.

The design input information for the pumping station was limited to inlet and outlet levels, required flow rate, and required discharge point. No client specifications were available and there were no pre-requisites of desired design parameters. WES therefore based the pumping station on a standard Sewer for Adoption Pumping Station using WES’s standard practices and technical assurances.

The civil design and hydraulic design of the system was undertaken by others. All mechanical and electrical design was undertaken by WES’s in-house design team. WES’s ISO 9001 accredited procedures ensured that both the design and construction phases of the project followed a structured methodology ensuring that all foreseen risks are eliminated whilst ensuring all design and Health & Safety information is shared with appropriate parties.

Design

The design of the pumping station required co-ordination with the civil and hydraulic designs to ensure that the correct pump was selected. An Environmental Agency discharge consent meant that the pumping station was limited to a maximum discharge rate of 5 litres per second. Without an expensive control system, WES worked with industry leading pump suppliers to select the most appropriate pump and prove through calculation that the system would discharge the maximum flow rate without the consent being breached.

WES designed the full M&E aspect of the project from pipe supports to the local control panel. The designs used the latest software packages and BIM techniques to ensure that not only did the pumping station design allowed for the installation to be undertaken but also that all interface points with the main contract was incorporated. All designs were risked reviewed, and peer reviewed prior to implementation.

Construction and Commissioning

The installation of the pumping station required coordinated cooperation with the Principal Contractor. WES’s in-house installation team worked with the client to ensure the works were carried in a safe and timely manner without the need for prolonged down time. WES ensure that all activities and prefabricated solutions that can be undertaken off-site is done so ahead of the start-on-site date. This allows for improved control over safety and quality of the installation.

Once installed, WES then worked with the client to commission the system. Key Performance Indicated (KPIs) and methods of testing were agreed early in the project to ensure the system was commissioned and put in use as quickly as possible. One of the key aspects of the discussions was the source and quantity of testing water to prove the system was operating correctly.

Project Success

Following the success of the installation, WES has been provided with further opportunities with undertake work with Baker Hicks and Astra Zeneca.
